Dharmenda Sahani
Born with strong connections to rural life and currently based in Rajkot, Gujarat, visual artist Dharmendra Sahani creates expressive contemporary paintings that explore themes of labor, memory, and everyday human experience. Sahani completed his formal art education at C.N. Fine Arts, Ahmedabad, earning his Diploma in Painting and Art Teacher Diploma with multiple student awards. Coming from a working-class background, Sahani draws raw inspiration from the routine events, objects, and people that define his life. His work presents memories of his rural past as atmospheric, blurred images, creating a poignant dialogue between his origins and his present urban reality.
A unique element of Sahani’s aesthetic is his tactile approach to canvas texture, which stems directly from the house-painting techniques he learned from his father. By combining these rich surface treatments with a thoughtful color palette of blues, greys, ochres, and earthy tones, he achieves a distinct balance between realism and experimental art. Sahani’s compelling vision has earned him major industry accolades, including the Bombay Art Society Merit Award, Camel Art Foundation Award, Finext National Award, and international competition prizes. His work has been widely exhibited at premier national venues, such as Jehangir Art Gallery, Nine Fish Gallery, and Nehru Centre in Mumbai, Dhoomimal Art Gallery in Delhi, and the Gujarat State Lalit Kala Academy.
