Born in 1982 in Kolkata, Jiban Biswas is a distinguished contemporary Indian artist known for his evocative explorations of Bengal’s rural landscapes, cultural heritage, and the intimate bond between humanity and nature. He earned his Bachelor of Visual Arts (BVA) from the prestigious Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata, in 2006. Throughout his formative academic career, Biswas earned early recognition, receiving the Ravi Jain Memorial Scholarship in 2003 and the Best College Award for 2005–2006. Over two decades of dedicated studio practice, his work has consistently captured the spiritual and tranquil essence of Indian countryside life, developing a distinctive visual language that bridges traditional roots with contemporary expression.
Biswas’s artistic practice centers on themes of natural harmony, frequently depicting cattle, birds, trees, and traditional motifs through a masterful interplay of texture, color, and composition. His artistic excellence has been widely lauded across the Indian art community, earning him prestigious honors such as the Prayas First Award (2015) and the Profulla Award (2017). Beyond the canvas, Biswas regularly engages in notable national art camps and workshops, including creative residencies organized by the Six Senses Hotel in Rajasthan, the ICAC Gallery in Goa, and Noida International University.
Since his debut solo show at Genesis Art Gallery in 2008, Biswas has held multiple solo exhibitions at premier venues like the Triveni Art Gallery in New Delhi and the Chemould Art Gallery in Kolkata. His work has been showcased extensively across India and internationally, with group exhibitions spanning major art hubs such as London, Amsterdam, Dubai, and Singapore, as well as landmark platforms including the India Art Fair and Bikaner House. Today, his paintings are held in prominent corporate and private collections—including the Emami Group, Fort Group, and Genesis Art Gallery—as well as private collections across France, Germany, England, and India.
