Sanju Das

Sanju Das (b. 1972, Kamrauli, Darbhanga, Bihar) is a prominent self-taught contemporary Indian painter whose distinguished career spans over three decades. Grounded in her rural upbringing and academic background from Women’s College, Laheriasarai, Das seamlessly bridges the rich heritage of traditional Mithila art with a refined contemporary sensibility. Her artistic vocabulary transforms folkloric geometry into vibrant, narrative-driven canvases that draw deep inspiration from childhood memories, literature, theater, cinema, and pressing social causes. Through signature series like My Village and celebrated individual works such as Padmshree Kisan Chachi, Betiyon Ke Sapne, and Dreams of Freedom, her practice articulates poignant commentaries on female agency, rural resilience, and internal liberation.

Currently based in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, Das has earned widespread national critical acclaim for her contributions to modern Indian visual art. She is a recipient of the Senior Fellowship Award (2022–23) from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, as well as the Senior Female Artist Award (2017–18) from the Government of Bihar. Her artwork is represented in prestigious institutional collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, Delhi, and has been featured on the covers of prominent publications such as Outlook, Grihalakshmi, Hans, Current Sahitya, and Teerbhukti. With six solo exhibitions, participation in numerous Lalit Kala Akademi art camps, and insightful presentations on Mithila traditions for the Uttar Pradesh Lalit Kala Akademi, Das remains a pivotal voice in evolving traditional folk art into a modern fine art dialogue.
