Vimal Ambaliya
Vadodara-based visual artist Vimal Ambaliya (b. 1986) completed his Diploma (2012) and Post Diploma in Painting (2014) at the prestigious Faculty of Fine Arts, The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda.
Ambaliya’s practice explores the evolving urban landscape, architectural structures, space, and engineering schematics. Focusing on rapid city growth and the tension between historic architecture and modern construction, he translates urban transformation into distinct thematic series such as Vadodara Series, Makan ki kheti, Prakash ki khoj, and Black Series. His process is deeply tactile, building dynamic surfaces on paper and canvas through overlapping color washes, rice paper, rollers, sandpaper, wood, and mixed media.
His practice has earned several notable honors, including the Abir First Take Award (2019), the Prafulla Dahanukar Art Foundation City Merit Award (2017, 2018), and the Jeram Patel Award from M.S. University (2012).
Ambaliya’s work has been featured in solo exhibitions, including Makan ki kheti (Udaipur, supported by the Gujarat State Lalit Kala Academy) and Prakash ki khoj (Ujjain). He has exhibited widely in group shows and national platforms across India, including Bikaner House (New Delhi), Gallery Ark (Vadodara), Hutheesing Visual Art Centre (Ahmedabad), CIMA Award Show (Kolkata), The Bombay Art Society (Mumbai), and AIFACS (New Delhi). He lives and works in Vadodara.
